Blogging again?

Well, trying anyhow. Just thought I'd sound off about ... what? Most things are too petty to get upset about. In a thousand years, who'll remember? But there is art and beauty and stuff like that there.

I just finished reading The Glorious Deception: The Double Life of William Robinson, aka Chung Ling Soo, the "Marvelous Chinese Conjurer" by Jim Steinmeyer. What a splendid, though desperately flawed, book! A wonderful evocation of Edwardian theatrical life, the book purports to be a biography of one of the great stage magicians of the day. While it certainly begins that way, it gets lost in too many side stories, at least one of which, that of the Great Lafayette, deserves its own book. However, the work, which begins so promisingly with insights into the life and motives of its subject, collapses into listing names and dates by the end. Still, the ride is worth the time invested, especially if you love magic.
